Stranraer Regatta 20 July 2024

The Magnificent Seven Row Again!

Fresh from the previous week’s trip up north to Ullapool, NBRC’s finest hit the road again, this time heading West to take part in the Stranraer Club Regatta.

A pre-regatta Friday night meeting in a local pizza restaurant attempted to resolve the complicated task of fitting 7 rowers – 4 female and 3 male – into 6 categories with accompanying coxes.

This actually proved easier than trying to order a pizza as the restaurant had somehow run out by 8pm!

5 Clubs duly turned up nice and early on Saturday to move the skiffs to the beach and out of the way of the local park run that was taking place at the same time. Initial races took place on a 1.9km triangular course with port turns however, with the weather and visibility deteriorating, the latter races were shortened to a 700m straight drag race back into the finish line.

All members rowed in at least 3 races with some rowing four and NB managed to medal in all 6 races with 2 golds, 1 silver and three bronzes, an amazing effort especially if you consider that our average age for the Men’s Open was 68!. We were pipped to being the overall winning club by Troon – congratulations to them.

Special mention must also go to Carl and John from Stranraer who jumped in to help us out in a couple of the races.

Thanks to Stranraer for their wonderful hospitality, wonderful cakes and evening bar-b-q and for pulling out numerous raffle tickets that the NB contingent had bought including a hamper of goodies.
