Monstering the Loch report by D McKay esq.
Two NB crews made their way north to take part in Monster the Loch – a multi human powered boat event along the 36.3km of Loch Ness from Dores to Fort Augustus.
Over 120 vessels took part and included skiffs, surfskis, gigs, Kayaks, Celtic longboats and even a paddle boarder or two. After being piped onto the water by a lone piper, word was passed down the line that we had in fact started.
The NB crews settled into a good rhythm and along with Stranraer were at the front of the competing St Ayles Skiffs. Both coxes provided the on-board entertainment which was a mixture of songs, jokes and useful Nessie facts.
Conditions were good for the first 20km but then the wind and the waves picked up causing issues for some boats and rowers who were used to the more gentle flows of rivers rather than more lumpy surfaces with some bailing required at times.
A few of the competing crews switched over half way at Foyers but the NB crews battled on and ended up as 1st and 3rd fastest skiffs in 3:48 hours and 3:53 hours respectively, a great effort by all concerned and ably assisted in the logistics by the support team on land.
The evening was spent refuelling and hydrating at a local establishment with a great sense of accomplishment by all.
I would encourage other members to consider these longer rows – just find a race, get a crew and train for it. You won’t regret it!
