21c and light winds meant that smooth conditions met the NB 50+ mens crew who went out for a 20 minute warm up at 0930 ahead of their heat at 11am.
With temperatures set to soar to 24-26c by Saturday the factor 50+ was in order.
1100 and our M50+ rowed hard and well to come second in their heat (5 of 5) and record the 6th fastest time of the heats (but some crews must have been leaving something in the tank surely?). Anyway, the crew then settled down to rest and refuel for the 1600 final.
Our W50+ crew went out for their heat (5 of 5 again) a while after and in increasingly hot conditions came in 8th. Hard luck and well done on all the training and preparation.
1600 and M50+ final. NB were holding decent position at the turn when rudder issues came back to haunt us. Losing several places at the turn (and a 10 second penalty) the NB crew rowed as hard as they could to make up some ground. Bad luck again to some of the same crew who had fallen foul of ‘Ruddergate’ 2 days before in the Mixed 50+.
The rudder pin went in for some maintenance work when SJB was hauled up the beach after the final with M50+ finishing in 13th place.
Not quite another Wednesday but all the same our crews rowed hard and made the most of what the training and fitness programme had given them. Better luck in your next races NB crews!
At the end of the day our convener Claire Simpson presented Lyndsay Henderson, our amazing coach, with a St Ayles skiff print as a token of thanks from the club for all her hard work and knowhow in getting us ready for the regatta (Editor – she has been amazing how lucky we are to have her at NB!).
And Claire Cadoux was recognised for all her selfless club work typified by the ‘duck day’ dressing up! 🙂
