The Broughty Ferry Regatta was held on Saturday 30th of May with 23 of our members heading along to take part. The club were looking forward to some great racing but also for some of their now legendary catering! We weren’t disappointed with breakfast rolls, gorgeous soups, sausage rolls and macaroni pies just some of the food on offer, along with lots of lovely baking.
The course consisted of three turns, a sharp first turn and two gentler turns before the sprint back to the finish. 9 clubs took part and most races were in two heats meaning it was all about getting round the course the fastest and waiting for the result of each heat to come in. Conditions on the water were great, and the water got flatter as the day went on making it really enjoyable to row.
The racing kicked off with the 60+ women, and it became clear that it was going to be a race to get to the first turn before the other boats and then trying to hold on for the best time across both heats.
There was a particularly exciting moment in the 60+ Mixed race where our boat, ably coxed by Sandy, managed an overtaking manoeuvre on the final turn of the race. Some excellent coxing and rowing!
There was also some inter crew competition to try to beat the 50+ Men’s time of 10:34 with the Open Mixed crew giving it their best shot…… and also making it round in 10:34!
The crews were thrilled with gold in 60+ Women, Open Women, 280+ Mixed, 50+ Women, 50+ Men, Open Mixed, 60+ Men, 50+ Mixed and Open Men with silver in 60+ Mixed. North Berwick were also really proud to have our name added to the Challenge Trophy for our overall results.
The weather was sunny and clear for much of the day with some showers in the afternoon as expected. Thankfully we were safely in Bro’tys beautiful boathouse for the prizegiving when the heavens properly opened at the end of the day.
We had a really enjoyable day at the Broughty Ferry Regatta, huge thanks to them for a warm welcome and for putting on such a well organised regatta, from the tractor pulling of our skiffs to the safety boats, catering, tombola and parking stewarding, top notch!
